HERNIATED DISC/ RADICULOPATHY
This disease is often caused by direct pressure from a herniated disc or degenerative changes in the spine that cause
irritation and inflammation of the nerve roots. Radiculopathy usually creates a pattern of pain and numbness that is felt in your
arms or your legs in the area of skin supplied the by sensory fibers of the nerve root, and weakness in the muscles that are
also supplied by the same nerve root. If the affected area is your neck and arm you are most likely suffering from Cervical
Radiculapathy, and if you experience pain in your back and legs it might be due to Lumbar Radiculopathy. Sciatica is a form of
Lumbar Radiculopathy.

Treatment consists of the entire myriad of pain management continuum including physical therapy, pharmacological
management, and nerve blocks such as Interlaminar or Transforaminal epidural steroid injections. In patients that are not
surgical candidates and experience radiculopathic symptoms spinal cord stimulation is an option. Furthermore, in selected
opioid responsive patients with escalating dose requirements, implantation of a Intrathecal Drug Delivery System might be
indicated.
